But this is because there are so many of them. <strong>Delightful cobbled streets, colourful balconies<\/strong>, the main square dominated by an imposing church, old men in hats passing the time chatting on a bench, <strong>buildings which ooze history<\/strong>. Sound familiar? Well yes, this could pretty much describe <a title=\"Cucunuba: A Real Colombian Town\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/cucunuba-a-real-colombian-town\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">any Colombian colonial town<\/a>, yet each one has <strong>its own charm, its own magic<\/strong> and often its own local delicacy or handicraft that gives it its own character.<\/p>\n<p>On our recent trip to Antioquia, we got to pass through several of these towns, towns which at the same time are <strong>so familiar and so new, so similar yet so individual<\/strong>, each with its own story, which the townsfolk were all too keen to share with us.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11748\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11748\" style=\"width: 371px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/antioquia-week-just-another-colombian-colonial-town\/don-joaquin\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11748\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11748  \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Don-Joaquin.jpg\" alt=\"Santa Elena, Antioquia\" width=\"371\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Don-Joaquin.jpg 588w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Don-Joaquin-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don Joaquin, a Santa Elena farmer who participates in Medellin&#8217;s Feria de Las FLores<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After arriving in Medellin\u2019s Rionegro airport, <strong>we were immediately whisked away to Santa Elena<\/strong>. This place is not your average Colombian town though. In fact, instead of being known as a \u00b4municipio\u2019, it is a \u2018corregimiento\u2019, which means that the rural population is larger than the urban population. As a result, Santa Elena\u2019s town centre is much less developed than in most Colombian towns, while <strong>the majority of the action takes place in the nearby farms and fincas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The details are perhaps best saved for another post, but <strong>Santa Elena is the home of the <i>silleteros<\/i><\/strong>, who carry the massive flower displays during Medellin\u2019s <a title=\"Ultimate Guide: How to be a Backpacker at the Medell\u00edn Flower Festival.\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/08\/ultimate-guide-how-to-be-a-backpacker-at-the-medellin-flower-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feria de Las Flores<\/a>. In fact, the only people who are allowed to participate in the parade are specific families from Santa Elena. All 420 <i>silleteros <\/i>are Santa Elena residents and this is where the displays get arranged, with <strong>each family working on a number of stunning designs<\/strong>. The fields around Santa Elena are alive with colour, hundreds of varieties of flowers <strong>turning green hills into veritable and kaleidoscopic paint palettes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11751\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11751\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/antioquia-week-just-another-colombian-colonial-town\/san-antonio-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11751\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11751   \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/San-Antonio-2.jpg\" alt=\"San Antonio de Pereira, Antioquia\" width=\"223\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/San-Antonio-2.jpg 498w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/San-Antonio-2-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A lamp post. And that&#8217;s San Antonio&#8217;s unassuming church behind it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Marinilla<\/strong>, just outside <a title=\"The Incredible City of Medell\u00edn, more than just friendly people (plus, vote Medell\u00edn for City of the Year!)\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/10\/medellin-innovation-and-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medellin<\/a>, is <strong>about as Colombian as you can get<\/strong> &#8211; its narrow streets full of life, the cattle crazing just outside the town, people chatting on their doorsteps and the delicious aroma of local street food wafting through the air. Tomorrow we will delve deeper into the fascinating culture and history of the town, <strong>known as the \u2018Sparta of Colombia\u2019<\/strong> apparently (thanks to the number of famous soldiers and revolutionary generals involved in Colombia\u2019s fight for independence that hailed from Marinilla\u2019s humble streets). Suffice to say that,<strong> if Marinilla\u2019s walls could talk<\/strong>, not only would it be one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, but they would also have centuries of intrigue and history to share with us.<\/p>\n<p>Not far from Marinilla is the small town of <strong>San Antonio de Pereira<\/strong>. A fairly unremarkable town, you might<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11747\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/antioquia-week-just-another-colombian-colonial-town\/san-antonio\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11747\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11747 \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/San-Antonio.jpg\" alt=\"San Antonio de Pereira\" width=\"420\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/San-Antonio.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/San-Antonio-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This rather unassuming little place can rightly claim to have some of the best desserts in Antioquia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>easily pass through it without a second glance. But that would deny you the opportunity to <strong>sample some of the tastiest desserts anywhere in Colombia<\/strong>. Head to \u2018Dulces y Postres\u2019 in the town\u2019s main square, grab a little spoon, try each and every one of the mind-blowing desserts and then settle on one to fill your belly. San Antonio is also the <strong>home of Colombia\u2019s National Empanada Festival<\/strong>, so this is clearly the place to be if you want to indulge yourself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11769\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11769\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/antioquia-week-just-another-colombian-colonial-town\/img_1447\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11769\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11769 \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/IMG_1447-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"The modern, sharp lines of Carmen&#096;s church. \" width=\"397\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/IMG_1447-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/IMG_1447-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The modern, sharp lines of Carmen`s church.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our trip also took us to <strong>Carmen de Viboral<\/strong>, a quite distinctive Colombian town and <strong>birthplace of Colombia\u2019s famous poet, Jose Manuel Arango<\/strong>. Friday will see us focus on the town\u2019s reputation as the centre for Colombia\u2019s ceramics industry, but a curious feature of the town is its church. In 1962, an earthquake destroyed the old church and a new one was built three years later in a style that, while <strong>contrasting starkly with the town\u2019s colonial feel<\/strong>, gives it a thoroughly unique look. The \u2018Ceramics Street\u2019, with its <strong>mosaic facades and colourfully designed plates<\/strong> only adds to the singular character of Carmen de Viboral.<\/p>\n<p>Each town we visited offered us <strong>a different insight into the local history, economy and culture<\/strong>, and highlighted the <strong>stunningly varied nature of Antioquia\u2019s offerings<\/strong>. Sure, Colombian colonial towns might be designed following the same blueprint, they might be architecturally very similar, but lumping them together in one category denies them their <strong>special characteristics, specific local traditions and peculiar nuances<\/strong>. Whether it\u2019s the colourful facades of <strong>Guatape<\/strong> (again, a post for another day) or the famed guitar factory of Marinilla, <strong>there are no two towns the same in Colombia<\/strong>, whatever you may have been led to believe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Charming colonial town\u2019 is a phrase that perhaps gets overused when referring to Colombia\u2019s old towns and traditional villages.
