Now I&#8217;m not sure if that&#8217;s the same here in\u00a0Colombia, but certainly there&#8217;s an incredible amount of fruit here and, more impressively, a <strong>huge amount of diversity<\/strong>. In fact, there&#8217;s a book in publication that details 150 commercial Colombian fruits. One hundred and fifty.\u00a0<em>Commercial<\/em>! That means there&#8217;s even more than that on the underground fruit scene! I wonder which fruit was the latest to sell-out?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it&#8217;s beyond the scope of this blog to list 150 fruits for you (sorry) but since fruit and <a title=\"7 Colombian foods I\u2019ve tried not to hate\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/7-colombian-foods-ive-tried-not-to-hate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food<\/a> is such a big part of\u00a0Colombian culture,<strong> here&#8217;s five of the best we&#8217;ve enjoyed in Colombia<\/strong> (part 2 will contain 5 more):<\/p>\n<h2>Uchuva \/ Cape gooseberry fruit<\/h2>\n<p>I first tried these little, round treats when my housemate came home carrying a bag full of relatively familiar fruit, and then<strong> something that looked like pot-pourri<\/strong>. Naturally I was outraged. How dare she<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3014\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3014\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/02\/the-colourful-world-of-colombian-fruits\/3392096281_319935f30a\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3014\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3014 \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/3392096281_319935f30a.jpg\" alt=\"Uchuva fruit, Colombia\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/3392096281_319935f30a.jpg 500w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/3392096281_319935f30a-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Uchuva in its papery cover and uncovered<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>spend our food budget on pointless decorations, no matter how pleasant smelling it might make our humble abode?! Of course, upon closer inspection I found <strong>a small, marble-shaped orange thing inside<\/strong>. Turned out it was fruit. Turned out it was delicious, very sweet and very more-ish. It&#8217;s pretty ideal for a small snack to munch on, or for jams and pies. Humble pie in my case.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Feijoa \/ Pineapple guava<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_366\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-366\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2011\/05\/colombian-fruits-part-1\/5324765446_b6191c7933_m\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-366\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-366\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/5324765446_b6191c7933_m.jpg\" alt=\"Feijoa fruit Colombia\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Feijoa straight from the tree<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As with many of the fruits in this list, I first tried feijoa<strong> in the form of a smoothie<\/strong> (good tip, if you&#8217;re unsure of what flavour smoothie the waiter\/waitress just offered you, just accept it, it&#8217;s usually delicious). It was less sweet than I expected but then I&#8217;m used to smoothies back home, where the fruit is almost always mixed with half a cup of sugar. Still, it was a great\u00a0accompaniment\u00a0to my meal and I&#8217;ve since tried it on it&#8217;s own and, yes, it was lovely.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Lulo \/ Naranjilla<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10424\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10424\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/7-colombian-foods-ive-tried-not-to-hate\/lulo-by-quimbaya\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10424\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10424 \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Lulo-by-Quimbaya-e1380573626823.jpg\" alt=\"Lulo, Colombian fruit\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This weird alien-like fruit is delicious<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is somewhat of a favourite in Colombia and it&#8217;s not hard to understand why. Many times when I&#8217;m out in a restaurant my Colombian friends will implore me to<strong> try a lulo smoothie<\/strong> and so, not wanting to disappoint, I&#8217;ve tried it for the first time about a dozen times. Still, it&#8217;s easy enough to act surprised when it really does taste\u00a0<em>that\u00a0<\/em>good.\u00a0It stands alone just fine but the real triumph of the lulo is found in smoothie form. The fruit has a citrus flavor, not a million miles from a lime, but <strong>with an extra little something to it<\/strong>. I&#8217;d highly recommend giving it a go<a title=\"The day I paid $80.000 pesos for a jug of Lulada. You heard me right\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/the-day-i-paid-80-000-pesos-for-a-jug-of-lulada-you-heard-me-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> as a juice<\/a>, especially if you like your juices<strong> hearty, healthy-tasting and green.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Maracuy\u00e1 \/ Passion fruit<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3017\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3017\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/02\/the-colourful-world-of-colombian-fruits\/270486478_eede99599d\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3017\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3017  \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/270486478_eede99599d.jpg\" alt=\"Maracuya Colombian fruit\" width=\"320\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/270486478_eede99599d.jpg 500w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/270486478_eede99599d-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maracuy\u00e1, ready to eat&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another fruit that surprised me with its diversity. Apparently it comes in three different species, all of which you can get in Colombia very easily. My personal favorite is the <strong>granadilla strain of passion fruit<\/strong>, which you dig your thumb into and then suck out the delectable, sweet seeds you&#8217;ll find inside. Of course, the other varieties you can&#8217;t go wrong with and I&#8217;m sure<strong> we&#8217;re all fans of passion fruit smoothies<\/strong> since they are out-of-this-world good (especially here in Colombia).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Guayaba \/ Guava<\/h2>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_369\">\n<dt><\/dt>\n<dd><\/dd>\n<dd>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3024\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3024\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/02\/the-colourful-world-of-colombian-fruits\/70290721_f62153081a\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3024\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3024 \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/70290721_f62153081a.jpg\" alt=\"Guayaba Colombian fruit\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/70290721_f62153081a.jpg 500w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/70290721_f62153081a-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3024\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stacks of guayaba<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Unbeknownst to me there&#8217;s an <strong>absolute ton of species of guayaba in the world<\/strong>. Although guava is available in some countries, it&#8217;s still relatively rare and, as always, tastes much better direct from the source.
