Sure, <a title=\"Stepping back in time: Villa de Leyva Impressions.\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/08\/stepping-back-in-time-villa-de-leyva-impressions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Villa de Leyva<\/a>\u2019s cobbled square and quaint streets have rightly made it one of Colombia\u2019s main tourist destinations. Barichara\u2019s red roofs and abundance of<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10623\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10623\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/cucunuba-a-real-colombian-town\/cucunuba7\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10623\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10623 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba7.jpg\" alt=\"Cucunuba, Cundinamarca\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba7.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba7-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What a jagged little cliff&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>pretty churches make it an obvious day trip from San Gil. A wander through the historic streets of <a title=\"Weekend Getaways \u2013 Gotta Get Down to Guatavita, Santa Fe de Antioquia or Calima.\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/02\/weekend-getaways-gotta-get-down-to-guatavita-santa-fe-de-antioquia-or-calima\/\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Fe de Antioquia<\/a> or amongst the <strong>grand, whitewashed buildings of Popayan<\/strong> will transport you to a different era. Spend some time <strong>experiencing magical realism in the mystical streets of Mompox<\/strong> or immerse yourself in culture in<a title=\"From the vault: \u201cDecisions, decisions\u2026 Tayrona National Park or Cartagena?\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/from-the-vault-decisions-decisions-tayrona-national-park-or-cartagena\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Cartagena\u2019s Old Town<\/a>. Each of these places will offer you a different, but wholly satisfying and thrilling, taste of Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10618\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10618\" style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/cucunuba-a-real-colombian-town\/cucunuba6\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10618\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10618  \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba6.jpg\" alt=\"Cucunuba, Cundinamarca\" width=\"384\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba6.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba6-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10618\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Check out Cucunuba&#8217;s awesome &#8216;Hollywood&#8217; sign in the background&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, sometimes it is the <strong>little things that open my eyes to the wonders of this country<\/strong>. The way\u00a0someone thanks me in a shop, the fact that the whole of Bogota is bathed in a sea of yellow on any match day, <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">that empanada I get on a nameless street corner<\/strong>, the policeman helping an old lady across the road or the way that <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">everyone seemingly knows when it is going to rain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cucunuba, about an hour and a half away from Bogota, is just one of those things. Mention the name to most Colombians and they won\u2019t have a clue what you are talking about. And why would they? This small village (no more than about 16 blocks in total) near Ubate <strong>seems to be going about its daily business, apparently unaware of the hustle and bustle of the nearby capital.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10619\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10619\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/cucunuba-a-real-colombian-town\/cucunuba5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10619\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10619 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba5.jpg\" alt=\"Cucunuba, Cundinamarca\" width=\"360\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba5.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba5-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10619\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Do you reckon you have enough sancocho there?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>White buildings with green trim line every cobbled street<\/strong> (although I did notice some cheeky so-and-so had added some red splashes to their balcony) and the pretty main square with the stereotypical fountain and church could make it look like any other small colonial town in Colombia. And therein lies its charm and fascination. Yes, this is a town like many others in this country, with <strong>ordinary, friendly Colombian people<\/strong> nonchalantly living their daily lives, unperturbed by the foreigner wandering gormlessly around the streets of their town. This is a place that <strong>tourism has not reached<\/strong> \u2013 one hotel and a closing time of 9pm for the bars is evidence enough \u2013 a place where people gather in the streets and children play freely in the town square, where <strong>life is calm, stress-free, happy and Colombian.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10624\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10624\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/cucunuba-a-real-colombian-town\/cucunuba8\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10624\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10624 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba8.jpg\" alt=\"Cucunuba, Cucunuba\" width=\"420\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba8.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba8-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oi, Mr. Red Balcony, who made you mayor of Cucunuba?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet this is not to say that there is nothing for the casual visitor here. The Laguna de Cucunuba, although itself not totally impressive, is <strong>set in a rural paradise<\/strong>. Clean air, green fields, awe-inspiring jagged cliffs, mountains on either side and a soothing breeze all make this an ideal place to relax, walk amongst<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10620\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/cucunuba-a-real-colombian-town\/cucunuba3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10620\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10620  \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba3.jpg\" alt=\"Cucunuba, Cundinamarca\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marvelling at the town and its beautiful surroundings. Or just trying to ignore the camera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>nature, or simply gaze in wonderment at it all. There is also a short path leading from the town up to <strong>Cucunuba\u2019s very own \u2018Hollywood\u2019 sign<\/strong>, passing by the 15 stations of the cross en route. The climb to the top offers breathtaking views of the village below set amongst the surrounding countryside.<\/p>\n<p>The town is also home to some charming cafes and shops. As far as it is known, it is<strong> renowned for its fabric<\/strong>, with numerous small shops selling traditional <i>ruanas<\/i> and scarves with the typical stitching of the town. What\u2019s more, Cucunuba is also the <strong>Greek yoghurt centre of Colombia<\/strong>\u00a0(who knows why. As with so many things in this amazing and confusing country, that\u2019s how it is so just accept it), with one caf\u00e9 specialising in delicious yoghurt-based deserts.<\/p>\n<p>As luck would have it, we arrived on the same weekend as the<strong> fiesta for the town\u2019s patron <\/strong>saint, which<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10621\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10621\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/cucunuba-a-real-colombian-town\/cucunuba4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10621\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10621 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba4.jpg\" alt=\"Cucunuba, Cundinamarca\" width=\"420\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba4-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Traditional dancing in front of the enthralled townsfolk&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>brought out the <strong>true colours and flavours of traditional Colombian village life<\/strong>. After our rude awakening at the hands of 5am firecrackers, a seemingly endless procession began (although given the size of the town, it had to cover the same route at least five times), while on the football pitch there was <strong>traditional dancing, music<\/strong> (a very small child with a strangely adult voice singing some vallenato classics) and delicious food. In the evening there was bingo and more festivities before <strong>the village returned to its quiet, unassuming norm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10622\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10622\" style=\"width: 313px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/cucunuba-a-real-colombian-town\/cucunuba2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10622\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10622 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba2.jpg\" alt=\"Cucunuba, Cundinamarca\" width=\"313\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba2.jpg 521w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Cucunuba2-260x300.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10622\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meat, llanero style&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you want to see Colombia, real Colombia, it is <strong>places like these that you need to visit<\/strong>.
