Simple as that. If I could marry her I would. But sadly I can\u2019t and the best I can do is keep on waxing lyrical about every aspect of Colombia: <strong>the people, the landscapes, the biodiversity, the culture and the food<\/strong>. Yes,<a title=\"Another Colombian Food Top 5: Colombia\u2019s Best Regions.\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/06\/another-colombian-food-top-5-colombias-best-regions\/\" target=\"_blank\"> the food<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the title of this post might be misleading, I like Colombian food. Sure, perhaps it\u2019s not recognised as international gourmet cuisine in the same way as Italian or French food, maybe it doesn\u2019t contain the array of spices and flavours that Arabic, Indian or Thai food does but it does the job. Moreover, <strong>there is an incredible variety of foods<\/strong>, owing to the contrast between each department\u2019s local delicacies.<\/p>\n<p>However, for fear of angering a number of proud locals, there are just some foods that I can\u2019t abide. Not for want of trying, mind you, but there is no ignoring the fact that<strong> I hate these foods<\/strong>. It appears that, sometimes, <strong>my love for Colombia cannot overpower my taste buds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>1. Changua<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10422\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10422\" style=\"width: 655px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/7-colombian-foods-ive-tried-not-to-hate\/changua-by-manuela-y-daniel\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10422\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10422  \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Changua-by-manuela-y-daniel.jpg\" alt=\"Changua, Colombian food by manuela y daniel\" width=\"655\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Changua-by-manuela-y-daniel.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Changua-by-manuela-y-daniel-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I&#8217;m not even sure I need to write anything, just look at the picture. Look at it&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the great divider \u2013 <strong>there are few people who are indifferent to this abomination<\/strong>. Much like Marmite (or vegemite for our Aussie readers. Or \u2018some weird brown animal\/plant extract spread that shouldn\u2019t be served to humans\u2019 to all our non-UK\/Australian friends) you <strong>either love it or you hate it<\/strong>. My hatred started as a mere conceptual one (seriously, milk, eggs, coriander and soggy bread? No thanks) but has since moved on to become a deep hatred of this diabolical Boyaca delicacy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. Chunchullo<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10423\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/7-colombian-foods-ive-tried-not-to-hate\/chunchullo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10423\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10423 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/chunchullo.jpg\" alt=\"chunchullo, Colombian food\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/chunchullo.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/chunchullo-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Doesn&#8217;t that look simply offal?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In all honesty I have never tried not to hate this. As I don\u2019t eat pork, I think<strong> fried pig intestine<\/strong> is about as off the cards as possible. Perhaps it\u2019s not fair to include this on the list if I\u2019ve never tried it, but just looking at these curly, fried bits of offal makes my stomach churn.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>3. Lulo<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10424\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10424\" style=\"width: 574px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/7-colombian-foods-ive-tried-not-to-hate\/lulo-by-quimbaya\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10424\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10424  \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Lulo-by-Quimbaya.jpg\" alt=\"Lulo, Colombian fruit\" width=\"574\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lulo &#8211; fruit or alien spawn?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a country that abounds with <strong>countless varieties of exotic, colourful and downright weird fruits<\/strong>, there is bound to be one that doesn\u2019t tickle your taste buds. I am constantly blown away by the sheer number of <a title=\"The Colourful World of Colombian Fruits\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/02\/the-colourful-world-of-colombian-fruits\/\" target=\"_blank\">tropical fruits<\/a> here that simply don\u2019t have a name in English. Lulo is one such fruit, but sadly its bitter, sour taste is something that genuinely makes me shiver. Or perhaps it\u2019s the memory of paying <strong>$80.000 pesos for a jug of <i>lulada<\/i><\/strong> in Cali\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>4. Arepas<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9438\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9438\" style=\"width: 608px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/08\/stepping-back-in-time-villa-de-leyva-impressions\/arepas-boyacense\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9438\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-9438 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/arepas-boyacense-e1375984414136.jpg\" alt=\"arepas boyacenses\" width=\"608\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9438\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">To me this just looks like an army of arepas getting ready to attack me<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ok, ok, before you all start jumping down my throat and calling for my head for <strong>insulting a classic Colombian favourite<\/strong>, hear me out. Perhaps <i>hate <\/i>is a bit of a strong word. Unlike some of the other things on this list, I can just about handle an arepa de choclo or an arepa de huevo every now and again. It\u2019s just that I don\u2019t understand, and don\u2019t think I ever will, <strong>why anyone would choose an arepa when bread is available<\/strong>. Bread is just so good. And try feeding me one of those fat, street arepas covered in butter, pineapple sauce and too much salt and I may just slap you in the face with it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>5. Hormigas culonas<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10425\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10425\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/7-colombian-foods-ive-tried-not-to-hate\/hormigas\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10425\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10425 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Hormigas.jpg\" alt=\"Hormigas culonas\" width=\"560\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Hormigas.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Hormigas-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10425\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hey, someone&#8217;s eaten most of the legs already!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite their supposed <strong>aphrodisiacal qualities<\/strong> (which, I admit, must have passed me by), I don\u2019t think I will be lauding the merits of eating ants. A bit like popcorn but <strong>with the aftertaste of, well, an ant\u2019s bum<\/strong>, this isn\u2019t something I imagine will catch on in international gastronomical circles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>6. Cheese and bocadillo (guava jelly)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10426\" style=\"width: 574px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/7-colombian-foods-ive-tried-not-to-hate\/bocadillo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10426\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10426  \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Bocadillo.jpg\" alt=\"Bocadillo (guava jelly)\" width=\"574\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Bocadillo.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Bocadillo-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the bocadillo on its own. It&#8217;s fine the way it is. Look how happy it is.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this same category I could include cheese and arequipe and cheese and chocolate. The seemingly <strong>inexplicable Colombian desire to mix cheese with something sickly sweet is beyond me<\/strong>. And don\u2019t even get me started on people putting bocadillo in my pizza crust.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>7. Maduro<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10427\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10427\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/7-colombian-foods-ive-tried-not-to-hate\/maduro\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10427\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10427 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Maduro.jpg\" alt=\"Maduro plantain, Colombian food\" width=\"618\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Maduro.jpg 772w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Maduro-300x148.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10427\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Get that banana off my barbecue. Now.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I like savoury, green plantain as much as the next man (or woman), but my hatred for maduro comes back to the whole <strong>sweet-savoury quagmire<\/strong>. It is a banana. A very sweet one. Why, then, is it on my plate with rice, beans and meat?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once again, I must emphasise that this is a small blot on <strong>Colombia&#8217;s almost-flawless reputation in my eyes<\/strong>. Sure, there are some foods that I just don&#8217;t understand and may never do so however long I live here, but I don&#8217;t have to eat them.
