Well, today we\u00b4re going to get right down to basics. It\u00b4s time for the gloves to come off, the guantlet to be dropped, and the clich\u00e9s to be swung in the breeze. No messing about. <strong>The greatest Colombian foods of all time are just about to go head to head<\/strong> in a battle to the death. Here, we get our expert crew of judges (with cameo judging decisions from our beloved Paul Fowler) to put their delicious snacks where their mouths are, and decide once and for all<strong> which foods reign supreme in Colombia<\/strong>. Strap your skates on, things are about to get&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>delicious.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 1: Todo Ricos <em>vs.<\/em> De Toditos.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>De Toditos, those brilliant, versatile, all-in-one bags of goodies, featuring all kinds of crazy salty snacks in the same bag, have <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/05\/colombian-cuisine-paul-chris-eat-ants-among-other-things\/\" target=\"_blank\">already <\/a>been road-tested here at SCT Towers. However, it\u00b4s time to give them the ultimate challenge by pitting them against their worthy rival, Todo Ricos. Well played, Todos, well played.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Azzam\u00a0<\/strong>sums it up best: &#8220;It\u2019s all in the name really. Todos. Ricos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 2: Ajiaco <em>vs.<\/em> Sancocho.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Undeniably,<strong> in this country bursting at the seams with absolutely delicious soups<\/strong>, ajiaco and sancocho rule the roost. In our profiles <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/01\/5-delicious-soups-you-should-try-when-you-travel-to-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, the hearty, smooth chicken-and-corn warmer comes before the flavour explosion that is sancocho. It\u00b4s time to find out if this is truly justified, or merely Bogot\u00e1 arrogance. In a stunning performance, the Bogot\u00e1 champion knocked the fancied challenger out in the second round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carolina\u00a0<\/strong>was heartily pleased with the result for nostalgic reasons: &#8220;I\u2019m a proud Bogotana. Besides, <strong>my auntie has made me love it<\/strong>. It goes very well with avocado.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 3: Wok <em>vs.<\/em> Crepes and Waffles.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These two wildly popular Colombian <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2011\/10\/top-5-colombian-chains-that-should-be-all-over-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">food chains<\/a> are so crowd-pleasing for extremely good reasons. First up,<strong> they both deliver ridiculously good, world-class food<\/strong>. Both also are very socially committed, with Wok intent on providing food sourced from battling small farmers (I mean their farms are small, not their stature: they\u00b4re generally of standard height) of Colombia; and Wok solely employing single mothers. This is certainly a battle that will tug at the heart strings of all food lovers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/greatest-colombian-food-rivalries-of-all-time\/wok-crepes\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10254\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10254\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wok-crepes.jpg\" alt=\"wok crepes\" width=\"750\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wok-crepes.jpg 750w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/wok-crepes-300x112.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And the winner is:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wok: 2.5 &#8211; 1.5.\u00a0<\/strong>This one was a heart-wrenching decision, and <strong>Carolina<\/strong>, in the end, couldn\u00b4t make her mind up.<strong> Wok just squeezes out Crepes in the Bogot\u00e1 derby<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gilesy\u00a0<\/strong>stands by his\u00a8decision in favour of the eventual winner : &#8220;Tough call, but for flavour, variety, and service, Wok wins out for me here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 4: Passionfruit <em>vs.<\/em> Grenadilla.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u00b4s time the embarrassing riches of the Colombian <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/02\/the-colourful-world-of-colombian-fruits\/\" target=\"_blank\">fruit world<\/a> put on a fight. Here, two members of the same family stoush it out. You may\u00a0<em>think\u00a0<\/em>you know passionfruit from back home, but it\u00b4s definitely a different kettle of seeds here in Colombia. Like any comparison between fruits here and fruits in your country,<strong> the Colombian variety is always at least ten times (don\u00b4t argue with science) more delicious<\/strong>. Grenadilla is less tart than its cousin, but delicious nonetheless, with amazingly <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/take-our-test-how-colombian-are-you\/\" target=\"_blank\">crunchy seeds<\/a>. We predict that this one will be hard to call.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/greatest-colombian-food-rivalries-of-all-time\/passionfruit-grenadilla\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10265\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10265\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/passionfruit-grenadilla.jpg\" alt=\"passionfruit grenadilla\" width=\"750\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/passionfruit-grenadilla.jpg 750w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/passionfruit-grenadilla-300x111.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And the winner is:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b><strong>A tie: 2-2.\u00a0<\/strong>Round after round, there was no way to split these two worthy adversaries. <strong>The real winner here, I think, is fruit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A resolute passionfruit fan from way back, <strong>Azzam\u00a0<\/strong>was at a loss over the result: &#8220;As an Arab, I am very passionate. This is my fruit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 5: Nectar <em>vs.<\/em> Antioque\u00f1o.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/02\/aguardiente-colombias-inexplicable-obsession\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aguardiente <\/a>is a completely inexplicable phenomenon.<strong> Why would one nation be so passionate about such a horrible drink?<\/strong> OK, I\u00b4ll have another shot. Here, the two most famous brands of this terrible alcohol finally nail down a shot at the title.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/greatest-colombian-food-rivalries-of-all-time\/antioqueno-nectar\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10255\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-10255\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/antioqueno-nectar.jpg\" alt=\"antioqueno nectar\" width=\"392\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/antioqueno-nectar.jpg 700w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/antioqueno-nectar-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/antioqueno-nectar-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And the winner is:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A tie: 1-1. <\/strong>This heavy-weight battle proved too tough to call. A little reminiscent of some UN decisions, it was deemed a tie with two abstentions,<strong> Lydia and Carolina detesting both sides<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Azzam\u00a0<\/strong>stands by his guns in going for the rolo option: &#8220;Hands down. In the past I have incurred the wrath of many an angry paisa.<strong> I know it is supposed to be the \u2018better\u2019 guaro<\/strong> (as far as that phrase means anything) but Nectar just goes down more smoothly ie is less likely to make me throw up on the spot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 6: Juan Valdez <em>vs.<\/em> Oma.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You should\u00b4ve expected coffee to make at least one appearance in this Colombian list. <strong>Coffee chains, particularly the two biggest ones, are surprisingly good here<\/strong>. They may look a bit like Starbucks, but the difference is that <strong>they actually serve good coffee<\/strong>. All that remains now is to see if Oma, the Pepsi of Colombian coffee chains, has what it takes to mix it with the champion, <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2011\/04\/juan-valdez-cafe-taking-on-coffee-franchises-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Valdez<\/a>. This isn\u00b4t going to be pretty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/greatest-colombian-food-rivalries-of-all-time\/juan-valdez-oma\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10256\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10256\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/juan-valdez-oma.jpg\" alt=\"juan valdez oma\" width=\"750\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/juan-valdez-oma.jpg 750w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/juan-valdez-oma-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And the winner is:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Juan Valdez: 4-0.\u00a0<\/strong>The undisputed champion continues to destroy everything in its path. <strong>Oma went home crying for its mama.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gilesy<\/strong>, however, had some kind words for the vanquished: &#8220;I think Oma baristas are generally more skillful, and that Oma\u00b4s food is way ahead, but the beans are superior at JV, and the wifi is way better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 7: Arepa \u00b4e Huevo <em>vs.<\/em> Arepa Boyacense.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We love <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/02\/arepas-love-them-or-hate-them-the-great-arepa-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\">debating arepas<\/a> here in at SCT Towers. Some of us actually get in a bit of trouble (particularly when there are certain paisas around) by saying that<strong> we don\u00b4t actually understand what all the fuss is about<\/strong>. However, there are two manifestations of that little disc of cornbread that never fail to get the saliva flowing: the fatty, eggy delight of Arepa \u00b4e Huevo from the coast, and the sweet, fluffy, cheesy bliss of its distant cousin from out <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/08\/stepping-back-in-time-villa-de-leyva-impressions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Villa de Leyva<\/a> way. Personally, I\u00b4d think this one would be tough to call.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/greatest-colombian-food-rivalries-of-all-time\/arepa-huevo-boyacense\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10257\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-10257\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/arepa-huevo-boyacense.jpg\" alt=\"arepa huevo boyacense\" width=\"490\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/arepa-huevo-boyacense.jpg 700w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/arepa-huevo-boyacense-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And the winner is:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Arepa \u00b4e Huevo: 3-0.<\/strong>\u00a0Controversy ran rife in this title fight, with the coste\u00f1o champion rollicking it in. To add insult to the Boyaca injury, judge <strong>Carolina<\/strong> went for the <strong>arepa <em>paisa<\/em>\u00a0instead of either of the challengers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gilesy\u00a0<\/strong>waxed philosophical in his judgement statement: &#8220;Not really a true dichotomy, as I think a ridiculously good and fattening meal would be an arepa \u00b4e huevo from Cartagena followed by an arepa from a roadside restaurant on the way to Villa de Leyva, but for pure indulgence, <strong>arepa \u00b4e huevo is hard to beat.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 8: Chocoramo <em>vs.<\/em> Gansito.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two sweet, <strong>chocolate-wrapped parcels of deliciousness<\/strong> available pretty much anywhere. It\u00b4s time these good-natured snacks were pitted against each other, to see who deserves the title of Chocolatey Cakey Snacky Championy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/greatest-colombian-food-rivalries-of-all-time\/chocoramo-gansito\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10258\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-10258\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/chocoramo-gansito.jpg\" alt=\"chocoramo gansito\" width=\"560\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/chocoramo-gansito.jpg 700w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/chocoramo-gansito-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And the winner is:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A tie: 2<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>2.\u00a0<\/strong>Another one impossible to call. It was a game of two halves.<\/p>\n<p>Agony in both camps:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Azzam<\/strong>\u00a0is outraged on behalf of Chocoramo<strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;No question. The delightful way that the succulent chocolate envelopes the crumbly sponge has me in fits of joy every bite.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b><strong>Carolina<\/strong>\u00a0on the reaction from Gansito:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;Not only is there chocolate but jam and cream, I\u2019m so into sweet flavors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 9: Street Hamburgers <em>vs.<\/em> Street Hotdogs.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was personally blown away by how ubiquitous <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/05\/burgers-everywhere-colombias-national-dish\/\" target=\"_blank\">hamburger\u00a0<\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/04\/life-lessons-living-in-colombia-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">hotdog <\/a>stands are here in Colombia. I was also blown away about <strong>how disgustingly <em>good\u00a0<\/em>they are<\/strong>. It\u00b4s time to make a tough decision, though. Which one wins the ultimate after-midnight street fight? Things are about to get messy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/greatest-colombian-food-rivalries-of-all-time\/hamburger-hotdog\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10259\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10259\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/hamburger-hotdog.jpg\" alt=\"hamburger hotdog\" width=\"750\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/hamburger-hotdog.jpg 750w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/hamburger-hotdog-300x117.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And the winner is:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hotdogs: 3-1.\u00a0<\/strong>In this gritty, late-night street fight, the dog just proved too strong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lydia\u00a0<\/strong>sums up the consensus: &#8220;I\u2019m not really keen on street food, but when I\u2019m too hungry, more particularly after a party, I don\u2019t mind!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Round 10: BBC <em>vs.<\/em> Tres Cordilleras.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We\u00b4d personally say that BBC is the king of craft beer here in <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/06\/salud-going-out-in-bogota-the-best-beers-of-the-city\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bogot\u00e1<\/a>, while Tres Cordilleras holds the crown in Medell\u00edn. OK, it\u00b4s time to pit <strong>paisa against rolo<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/08\/great-rivalries-bogota-vs-medellin\/\" target=\"_blank\">once again<\/a>.
