It’s time for a bit of Friday fun, folks. We have scoured the world (well, just Colombia actually) to bring you some of the funniest place names in Colombia. From downright rude to inexplicably random, we have collected a list of Colombian towns with the strangest names.
1. Si Te Acuerdas, Antioquia
That’s right, there is actually a town called ‘If You Remember’. I guess the parties in this place must be pretty wild.
2. Piojo, Atlantico
Piojo can either mean louse or ugly person. Either way, it doesn’t sound like a great place to live.
3. Mariquita, Tolima
There’s something very politically incorrect about a town called ‘Little Gay Person’ don’t you think?
4. El Coma, Antioquia
Just another ‘sleepy’ Colombian town I guess…
5. Socorro, Santander
It’s surely not a good sign when someone arrived in your town and the first thing they thought was ‘Help’.
6. Vayan Viendo, Antioquia
Now here’s a place with an inviting name. It’s just so welcoming when a town asks you to ‘Take a Look’.
7. Venezuela, Santander
Perhaps the most amusing thing about this town is that it is fairly close to the Venezuelan border which, I can only asssume, causes oodles of confusion.
“Where are you from?”
“Venezuela.”
“Really? Me too. Which part of Venezuela?”
“Calle 16”
“Huh?”
8. Ventaquemada, Boyaca
Tip: don’t start a business in ‘Burnt Sale’.
9. Mojaculo, Magdalena
This is my personal favourite. I just wish I could have been there at the town meeting when they were coming up with the name.
“How about Sweaty Armpits?”
“No, I don’t think it gives off the right impression. I like Smelly and Dirty.”
“Nobody will visit. Surely something like Slow, Painful and Boring Death would work better?”
“Let’s just stick with the original idea, there’s surely no way that can be misconstrued.”
10. Soledad 2000, Atlantico
Any place name with a number in it is fine by me. Especially as someone at the turn of the cenury thought that 2000 would be cool forever. You’re not wrong, buddy.
11. El Plan, La Guajira
I love it when El Plan comes together (for the local fiesta, obviously).
12. Colombia, Cundinamarca
I am yet to visit, but I can only assume that this town is a mini-Colombia with all the different regions, customs, cuisines and cultures melted down into a much smaller space. Either that or it’s a pretty self-indulgent name,
13. Distracción, La Guajira
Huh, what? Sorry I was a million miles away. In La Guajira.
14. Si Se Apura, Antioquia
‘If You Hurry’ to Antioquia, you can make a trip through all of the weirdly named towns that this region has to offer.
15. Siberia, Cundinamarca
If anyone has been to Siberia in Russia and Colombia’s counterpart, you will probably understand where the name came from. Let’s leave it at that.
Bonus: Salsipuedes, Argentina
I know this isn’t in Colombia, but I just love the idea of a town being so awful that visitors are warned to ‘Get Out If You Can’. Next flight to Cordoba anyone?
Have we missed any corkers? Which Colombian towns would you include?
