Semana Santa In Colombia: What We’ll Be Doing

It’s approaching Semana Santa and we in the office are getting pretty excited. Semana Santa means travel, and that’s exactly what we’re all doing. Here’s a run down of our travel plans. Be sure to get in touch on Facebook and let us know what your plans are, we love to hear of travel adventures (and imagine we’re on them…).

Today, in a mere matter of hours, my brother will arrive with his girlfriend to El Dorado Airport, Bogotá. I can’t wait for him to get to know my adopted city, as well as some of the most important parts of the country.

We’ve chosen to go to the Colombian Amazon and the Coffee Region. The Amazon has always been a dream for me and my brother. When we were younger and used to backpack Europe as often as we could, and I thought we were pretty cool for just having a swim in the Danube. I think we may never have thought we would make it this far. It seemed a world away. Now, while it’s not exactly on my back doorstep, it is in the same country I live in, so we’re going to get our adventure hats on, and sail down the Amazon River.

Our first stop, though, is the Coffee Region. I’ve been to the Coffee Region twice before but it never fails to impress me. I love the culture, I love the views, I love the coffee. Moreover, I think it’s important for anyone who vacations in Colombia to come to this area: it’s the heart of Colombian enterprise.

You may or may not know that Marcela and I recently had a baby, the beautiful Maria del Mar. For this reason, we’re not able to skip off to various parts of the country like Paul! Still, we wanted to mark Maria del Mar’s first Semana Santa with a little trip, so we’ve decided on a small jaunt to Villa de Leyva for a few days to relax, take some sun and eat some delicious food.

Soon though, very soon, we’ll be sticking a backpack on our daughter and taking her all around the country! They just don’t make 5-month old baby size backpacks…

…Yet.

I’ve been away from home for a long time, and when I do (if I do) move home for good, I still want presents and Christmas. For this reason, I decided it was a good idea to go and see mum, otherwise she’ll be angry for me for a long time.

I’ll miss Colombia for the two weeks I’m away, but I’m looking forward to some warm beer and, if the weather stays as it is, nicer weather than I had in Colombia. Yup, you read it, England at the moment is nicer than Colombia. Admittedly, it’ll only last two or three more days I’m sure.

Sarah on her travels

I’m going with my boyfriend to the beautiful Tayrona National Park. After a long stint in busy Bogotá, we’re looking forward to some time on the beach, away from cars, pollution and concrete.

Tayrona National Park, Colombia

Every time I go to Tayrona I fall in love with the place again. Its wind swept beaches, beautiful views and wild jungles are the perfect escape. We’ve promised to bring the team back some coconuts but I’m pretty sure we’ll be feeling so lazy we’ll forget…
